It is a common tendency of people to form a stereotype of a place, person, thing, etc, on the basis of what they see, hear and perceive. So today we are going to discuss something similar and these are the “8 Misconceptions Non-Himachalis have about Himachal Pradesh“:
8. We too feel cold
It is a common phrase that you get to hear from your friends while visiting some cold place.
So while they are feeling frozen in that type of weather, they expect you to be fine because “You Are From Himachal!“ . That is very logically illogical thought. It is like believing a fact that a person who once lived in a desert is always thirsty to be true. (I think you got my point :p)
7. We speak Pahadi and not Himachali.
It is sometimes obvious to think that the language which is spoken in a particular region has its origin in the name of the region. For example, Punjabi belongs to Punjab, Haryanvi belongs to Haryana, Gujrati belongs to Gujrat, etc. But this doesn’t apply to Himachal Pradesh as Pahadi is the official language and interestingly it can further be distinguished into multiple dialects belonging to certain areas within Himachal like Sirmouri, Kulluvi, Mandyali, Kangri, etc.
6. How do you build houses on hills?
It is question which is asked very often by the outsiders as they can’t visualize how houses can be built on hills, slopes or mountains, etc. My answer to them is that it will be foolish to make a house parallel to the slope as it won’t be feasible and it is almost impossible to build a house that way in the first place.
So, just like other places, land is cleared, cut down and leveled so as to make a house.
5. Stereotypes about how Himachalis look
Non- Himachalis generally have some type of stereotypical image about how a Himachali looks like and it depends from person to person. Some view them as thin and short in their physical appearance, some think they are fair and have small eyes or red cheeks. People with such appearance do exist here but there are many who don’t fit in these stereotypes and here are some of them:
4. Bollywood too messed up the image of Himachal at few instances
There have been instances when Bollywood projected some places of Himachal in a different way and it has only added up to the confusion in the minds of outsiders. Here are the 2 such instances:
- Me Prem ki Deewani Hu: This movie misrepresented the Himachali Town of Sundernagar and showed some Foreign location while still keeping the name.
2. Same happened with the Kasauli town in “Koi Mil Gya” movie starring Hrithik Roshan.
3. People think Black magic and Voodoo stuff is a common happening in Himachal
This is something which no one can totally deny or accept as most of the Himachalis like me have just heard of it and never actually experienced. We don’t even get to hear or read anything like that on the news and our society is changing very fast where people don’t really give attention to these things. These things are more prevalent in Plains and we have heard of few such incidents in Delhi,UP,etc, on the news channel.
2. Not every Himachali smokes Weed 😀
Even though the Malana Cream won the award for being the best weed all over the world twice still it is something which has to do with an individual. There is nothing wrong in having an opinion about anything and if done in a limit it won’t harm but then it comes down to why you wish to do it. Even though I believe that everybody has consumed it at least once in a lifetime as it is attached to Lord Shiva and there is a tradition of consuming a special drink made with weed called “Ghota” during the Festival of “Maha Shivratri“.
1. It doesn’t snow everywhere in Himachal
It is one of the biggest misconception about Himachal and whenever people think of Himachal, the first image which pops out of their mind is a place covered with snow. Though Himachal has some of the finest snow covered spots in the world and mainly Himachal is known for that yet there are other places where it doesn’t snow at all.
Lets see a picture with snow so that you feel that there is something you were right about 😀
